CUT AWAY MODEL OF BRAKE RETARDER SYSTEM
  • The wheel speed service brakes are applied by hydraulic action and released by springs. The main components are the pistons, the discs, the plates, the springs and the pins. The wheel speed brake is used on construction trucks and some large wheel loaders.
  • The wheel speed brakes are grooved to the wheel and spin at the same rpm as the tires. Wheel loaders use brakes on each wheel, while some truck models have those brakes only on the rear axles. The wheel speed brakes are cooled by transferring heat to the oil pan. Brakes that work in a crankcase without oil flow are called "submerged" brakes. Brake systems that have chillers and force the oil through the brakes are called "forced cooling brakes".
